Is tongue brushing a new trend?

Daily gentle tongue brushing is recommended by your dentist.

Your tongue is coated with tiny lumps called papillae which give a rough surface. Over time, a biofilm layer can accumulated on your tongues surface if you don’t clean it regularly.

This biofilm is loaded with bacteria which can cause bad breath and even damage to your teeth.

Is mouthrinse good enough?

Biofilm on tongue is a group of bacteria that stick together in multiple layers. Mouthrinse may kill outer surface bacteria but not the bacteria living in a deeper level. If left behind, they rapidly multiply soon after rinsing.

How to clean your tongue?

Most toothbrushes have a special rubber layer on the back designed for tongue cleaning. Tongue scrapers can also be used and are available at supermarket stores or chemist.

To effectively clean your tongue, gently brush from side to side, back and forth then rinse with water.

If you are still suffering from bad breath after a week of twice-daily tongue cleaning, please send us a message to arrange a chat with our dentist. Bad breath can also come from medications, sinus issues, tooth decay, infections and other sources.
